MIOCA Programs:Survivors Teaching Students
Many Michigan survivors participate with the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance’s (OCRA) innovative educational program, Survivors Teaching Students®. The purpose is to help future healthcare professionals – physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers and physician assistants - increase their understanding of ovarian cancer symptoms and risk factors so they are better able to diagnose the disease in its earlier, most treatable stages.
Since 2002, this program features ovarian cancer survivors sharing their experiences and first hand information about the disease. Survivors Teaching Students® is now active in nearly 150 medical schools, hospitals and healthcare training programs nationwide, including many in Michigan.
"The Survivors Teaching Students Program is an annual highlight for our Oakland University Doctor of Physical Therapy Students. The heart felt presentations interspersed with evidence-based knowledge application bring the human experience of healthcare to our students. We are thrilled we will be able to continue this program using a remote format as our students consistently report this is among their favorite learning experiences."
-Dr. Sara Arena, Associate Professor, Oakland University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program
"Med school is more than academics; it's learning to listen to patients, connecting with patients, learning empathy. STS has taught our students to do just that - listen, connect, FEEL. Thank you STS Program!"
-Mary Jordan, DO, FACOG, MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine
