Advocacy Day in Washington D.C.

Contact:  Pam Dahlmann mioca.org@gmail.com Join survivors, caregivers and the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance in Washington, DC, to advocate for the programs and research that pave the way for better treatments for ovarian cancer. Your elected officials need to hear from YOU in 2015 to ensure that ovarian cancer research and education programs remain a Congressional priority.  Registration is free. Attendees are responsible for travel and lodging costs in Washington D.C. Don't miss out!  Registration closes January 31, 2015. Click here to register.  For help with travel and lodging expenses, please submit an application for the Lori Haber Buckfire Advocacy Travel Scholarship.  Completed applications are due by Sunday, January 25. 

MIOCA Announces Geri Fournier Ovarian Cancer Research Grant Opportunity

To accomplish the significant goals of discovering an early detection test for ovarian cancer or developing improved treatments, researchers must be provided with the resources necessary to pursue innovative ideas.   MIOCA is committed to collaborating with ovarian cancer researchers by allocating funds to support research here in the state of Michigan.  We are proud to announce the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance Geri Fournier Ovarian Cancer Research Grant. The submission deadline is now closed.  Thanks to all of the researchers who recently applied for MIOCA's grant funding.  Watch for an announcement to come soon.

Turn the Village Teal Video Shared by JoAnne Purtan

MIOCA's Turn the Village Teal event provided the opportunity for survivors and supporters to celebrate survival and pay tribute those women who have died from ovarian cancer.  MIOCA was honored to have WXYZ's JoAnne Purtan join us for the day.  JoAnne was inspired by what she saw and created this video of the event.

Livonia "Civic Center" turned teal for September

Bringing awareness to ovarian cancer is one goal of Livonia resident Margaret Kapolnek's with the addition of some new, temporary decor at Livonia's Civic Center campus. Teal ribbons, which have been going up in towns across the country for eight years, is a national awareness project done locally by the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance, which places the ribbons in cities and townships all throughout Michigan during September.  To read entire article, click here

Shake Your Teal Feather to fight ovarian cancer

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Grab those sneakers and bust out your teal clothing because next weekend is the Shake Your Teal Feather Fun Run/Walk to fight ovarian cancer. The fundraiser, benefitting the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance, is Saturday at 2 p.m. at the John Ball Park Zoo in Grand Rapids. Locals turn Northville teal to raise awareness

Northville residents Terrie Karebian and Vicky Van Gorder have different stories in getting diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but they share the same battle to raise awareness and help others. To get the message out they kicked off Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month a little early and participated in the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance / Turn the Towns Teal (R) event by wrapping teal-colored ribbons on light poles around downtown Northville. “We want others to have a better understanding of the symptoms of ovarian cancer and its diagnosis,” said Karebian on Aug. 18 before placing the ribbons along Main and Center streets. “It’s important to us on a very personal level and that’s why we are here today to begin raising even more awareness.”  Read full article here.

Calling all volunteers...Teal Ribbons coming to a neighborhood near you!

Once again MIOCA is partnering with Turn the Towns Teal to raise awareness during National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.  Survivors and MIOCA supporters will be tying teal ribbons in many cities and towns across the state.  Pam Dahlmann, MIOCA president, states, "It is so important we make the most of this opportunity to educate and raise awareness of ovarian cancer.  For thirty days each year, we want a sea of teal."  The teal ribbons often provide a catalyst for conversation as people on the street ask for more information.  To tie ribbons in your area, please click here to see the schedule and contact information.

Webinar for Michigan Primary Care Asociation gets positive reviews

MIOCA is proud to have partnered with Dr. Carolyn Johnston, U of M gynecologic oncologist, and Ann Garvin, Michigan Dept of Community Health nurse consultant, on July 16 to educate primary care physicians about ovarian cancer.  The webinar received very positive reviews!
