MIOCA Board of Directors
Organization Overview: Established in 2011, the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MIOCA) strives to save women's lives by promoting the early detection of ovarian cancer and improved treatment outcomes. MIOCA raises awareness of ovarian cancer, provides resources and support to survivors and their families, advocates both locally and federally, educates Michigan communities, and funds innovative ovarian cancer research.
Vision: MIOCA is working collaboratively to end ovarian cancer and improve the lives of survivors. To this end, MIOCA serves survivors and their families by providing information, resources and support services as well as advocating for increased research and access to care. MIOCA serves the public by educating both women and healthcare professionals to better recognize ovarian cancer symptoms to help save lives through earlier detection. MIOCA is invested in Michigan’s scientific community by awarding ovarian cancer research grants.
Board of Directors Description: MIOCA is seeking dedicated individuals interested in joining our statewide board working toward making positive progress in the field of ovarian cancer throughout the state of Michigan. The board of directors is made up of individuals passionate about making positive change for ovarian cancer. Together, board members maintain focus on the mission, ensure programmatic and organizational stability, engage in fundraising and public relations, provide financial oversight and establish and oversee organizational governance.
Desired Experience: The Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance is seeking candidates interested in joining an engaged state-wide board. Ideal board members will be dedicated advocates for ovarian cancer research, awareness and support. Ideal candidates possess experience/expertise in one or more of the following areas:
● Nonprofit governance and finance
● Knowledge of ovarian cancer and/or public health
● Building corporate/community relationships
● Nonprofit policy and legal standards
● Diversity, equity and inclusion
● Community engagement
● Development and fundraising
MIOCA Asks that Board Members:
● Act as a public representative and ambassador of MIOCA at events and in the community.
● Attend board meetings, currently 6 meetings per year, via zoom.
● Participate in at least 2 MIOCA events per year. Examples of events include fundraising events, outreach/community activities, awareness month campaigns, etc.
● Participate on at least 1 committee (including development, research, communication/engagement, and policies/procedures committee).
● Participate in fundraising/sponsorship opportunities to support the mission and work of MIOCA.
● Annual donation to MIOCA is expected, at your comfort level. We expect that our organization will be among the top 3 charities that you support.
● Board members are appointed for a 2 year term with opportunity for renewal.
