Genetic Testing for Inherited Susceptibility to Ovarian Cancer

Presenter: Kara J. Milliron, MS, LCGC Lead/Licensed Certified Genetic Counselor Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk Evaluation Program Rogel Cancer Center at the University of Michigan

Kara is a licensed certified genetic counselor and has worked exclusively in the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk Evaluation Program at the Rogel Cancer Center at the University of Michigan since 1998.  Kara has a BS in Biology from Grand Valley State University and a Master’s of Science in Genetic counseling from the University of Pittsburgh.

In this session, Kara will be joining us to speak about genetics and ovarian cancer risk. With her expertise in the field, Kara will provide valuable insights, information, and answer questions on this important topic. All are invited to join us for this lunchtime conversation and to learn more about genetics and ovarian cancer.

Genealogy and Your Family Health Portrait

Presenter: Janet Tarolli, Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County Michigan

Janet is an active member of the Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County Michigan. She is retired from the University of Michigan where she worked as a data manager in the Comprehensive Cancer Center's Clinical Trials Office and as a registered nurse at University of Michigan Hospital.

In this session, Janet will introduce you to the basics of genealogy methodology and creating a medical family tree. She will review how to establish what you know, what to ask family members, how to record and document your information, and how to use free online searchable databases at Ancestry.com and FamilySearch to view common records. She will explain how to fill out a standard pedigree form and a family group sheet and will demonstrate how to enter information into My Family Health Portrait, an online tool offered by the U.S. Surgeon General, and MFHP: Cancer, a mobile app offered by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
